Best Possible Opponents for Vasyl Lomachenko

Vasyl Lomachenko battered Jason Sosa on Saturday night, winning every round of the fight and forcing Sosa’s team to stop the fight following Round 9. Nobody should be surprised. Sosa received a gift draw against Nicholas Walters in December 2015. Walters was humiliated by Lomachenko last November. This was a complete mismatch on paper and proved to be in the ring, as well.

For a fighter who has been as dominant as Lomachenko, there are a limited number of compelling fights available. Few fighters near his weight would appear to be competitive with him at this time. Here are the best potential opponents for him:

Orlando Salido The tough veteran handed Lomachenko his only professional loss, in his second fight. Lomo has evolved quickly since then, but the fight would have an interesting historical angle.

Jezreel Corrales The Panamanian stunned long-time super featherweight WBA title-holder Takashi Uchiyama last year with a Round 2 KO. He won the rematch by split decision, in Uchiyama’s hometown. After Lomachenko, Corrales has to be viewed as the top fighter at 130 pounds, so the winner would unify belts and deserve to be called the true champion in the division.

Miguel Berchelt Berchelt emerged as one of the sport’s potential rising stars last year when he stopped Francisco Vargas on his feet in Round 11. He has an impressive 71″ reach and 28 KOs in 32 professional fights.

Mikey Garcia This is the superfight that fans all have their eyes on. Garcia may not have shown quite the same dazzling technical skill as Lomachenko, but he has been a brutally effective boxer-puncher, with perfect 36-0 record with 30 KOs. As he demonstrated in knocking out previously undefeated Dejan Zlaticanin last January to capture the WBC belt, he has carried his power up to 135 pounds.

Manny Pacquiao There is no doubt Top Rank would love to see this passing-of-the-torch clash between their biggest star of the century to date vs. their biggest rising star. It might take another year, though, before it would be worth it for Pacquiao to cut down to 135 pounds at this point in his life.
