The Current Welterweight Top 10

With Manny Pacquiao set to challenge for Jessie Vargas’ WBO welterweight belt this weekend, it’s a good time to update the welterweight top 10.

No. 1: Manny Pacquiao Pacquiao holds none of the belts in this division, but his career resume and win over Timothy Bradley last April prove he still deserves the top spot here.

No. 2: Kell Brook, IBF Champion Brook was impressive against Gennady Golovkin last October, previous to getting his orbital bone broken by the middleweight champ. Still, he was a wrecking machine at 147 and his victory over Shawn Porter make him the best of the upcoming crop.

No. 3: Keith Thurman, WBA Champion Close behind Brook. He defeated Porter last June in what might be 2016’s Fight of the Year.

No. 4: Errol Spence Jr. Might just end up the next pound-for-pound king. His knockouts of Chris Algieri and Leonard Bundu this year have clearly established him as a rising superstar.

No. 5: Shawn Porter A bruising, athletic fighter with a good ring IQ. Has only lost to Thurman and Brook.

No. 6: Timothy Bradley One of best pound-for-pound fighters of the past decade. Has not fought since losing to Pacquiao last April. Has been through some real wars during his career.

No. 7: Danny Garcia, WBC Champion Garcia is undefeated and was the top fighter at 140 pounds. Some would rate him higher. He has the opportunity to prove his true value next March when he faces Thurman in a unification bout.

No. 8: Amir Khan Has some good moments versus Saul Alvarez, prior to getting knocked out by him last September. Would be a tough matchup for anybody on this list.

No. 9: Jessie Vargas, WBO Champ He had Bradley in bad trouble late in their fight in 2015. He took the vacant WBO belt earlier this year with a brilliant performance against Sadam Ali. Has his big opportunity Saturday against Pacquiao.

No. 10: Antonio Orozco Orozco is undefeated and has talent. Has defeated some good fighters like Emmanuel Taylor and Humberto Soto. Should face a true contender in 2017.
