Former MLB infielders Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo were killed in a car crash in Venezuela on Thursday.

Their club, Cardenales de Lara, confirmed the deaths of Valbuena and Castillo. Both played Thursday night prior to the accident.

At some point after the game, the vehicle they were in either hit a rock or swerved to avoid hitting a rock before going off the road. The car was driven by teammate Carlos Rivero. Rivero survived the crash.

Valbuena played in the majors from 2008 to 2018, most recently appearing in 96 games for the Los Angeles Angels last season before the team released him in August. The Angels tweeted Thursday night;

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Angel Luis Valbuena and former MLB infielder Jose Castillo. Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this time of grief.”

Castillo played five seasons with Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Houston. He had a .254 average with 39 home runs.
