After President Trump tweeted that the NBA champions were uninvited to the White House, the Penguins said that they would honor the tradition of title-winning teams and visit. Even Sidney Crosby, playoff MVP and Penguins captain, said he supported the decision, but former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque says it is ”an embarrassment.”
Laraque, who considers hockey to be a more conservative sport and who himself was a black athlete in a predominately white sport, mentioned to the Canadian Press that this time the Pens got it wrong. He even went so far as to say that he was surprised that the league itself did not take a stand.
“I know hockey’s more conservative than other sports, but this time it’s just wrong. I’m surprised the NHL didn’t make a stand. To me, it’s an embarrassment that they’re going. When they go there, it’s not going to look good. They’ll get demolished. This is the last place the Stanley Cup should be.”
