Lexi Thompson’s Issues Statement After Penalty Controversy

Lexi Thompson, who was penalized 4 strokes after a viewer reported a violation, took to Instagram only hours after losing the ANA Inspiration.

Apparently Thompson did not properly place her ball down where she had marked her spot before putting out on 17 during the third round of the event. You can see a video below of what happened:

The LPGA issued the following statement explaining what happened.

In her statement, Thompson made it clear that she did not move her ball intentionally on the 17th hole. She called her day “emotional” and said that she was looking forward to a much-needed vacation.

Thompson was leading the event prior to being informed of the penalty. The four-stroke penalty dropped her to two behind the leader, but she rallied to force a playoff, but ultimately lost.

The four-stroke penalty gave her competitors a huge opportunity and So Yeon Ryu took advantage by pulling out the win. The controversy has led to many golfers, including Tiger Woods, stating that they don’t feel viewers should be able to point out violations that can affect outcomes a day later.
