Luis Ortiz Caught up in a Promotional Tug-of-War

Luis Ortiz

Undefeated heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz was supposed to fight on the September 17 Canelo Alvarez pay-per-view card, against once-beaten Belarus giant Alexander Ustinov. But a business dispute between his co-promoters, Dade Promotions and Golden Boy, have pushed back the potential date for the bout.

In an article by Rick Reeno on, Ortiz’s manager, Jay Jiminez, said the Cuban slugger is stuck in a waiting game while the promoters squabble: “We’re negotiating. We’ll no by next week, maybe next Monday.”

It’s a lousy break for Ortiz, who I regard as the most talented heavyweight on the planet right now. Ortiz is 6’4″ and 240 pounds and extremely athletic for his size. He’s got a formidable 84″ reach. Above all, he’s an outstanding technical and tactical fighter.

But the big Cuban is also 37, so it is not like he has all the time in the world to wait for his big opportunity. Since knocking out Bryant Jennings last December, he has been firmly on the radar in the heavyweight scene. But other contenders are not exactly lining up to face him.

As the WBA interim champion, he is lined up to take part in the WBA’s tournament to “unify” their interim, “regular” and “super” world titles. The winning of Ortiz and Ustinov is supposed to face the winner of the Tyson Fury-Wladimir Klitschko rematch.

So if things unfold the way they should, Luis Ortiz should get the opportunity to finally climb to the top of the heavyweight mountain by sometime next year. I think he would knock out either Fury or Klitschko. I think he’d do the same to WBC belt holder Deontay Wilder. The only real danger I see on the horizon for him right now would be IBF belt holder Anthony Joshua. And the Brit is still a year or two from being ready for a veteran like Ortiz.

But to get the opportunities he really needs, Luis Ortiz is going to need to stay active. And he’s probably going to need to continue his relationship with Golden Boy, who is a major powerbroker in the fight game.
