Manny Pacquiao has long taken a strong stance against marriage but his latest remarks could cost him his partnership with Nike.
According to TMZ, Nike is considering cutting ties with the boxer in light of his most recent homophobic comments.
During an interview on Monday with a Filipino television station, the 37-year-old boxer said allowing same-sex marriage would make us ‘worse than animals.’
“Will you see any animals where male is to male and female is to female? The animals are better. They know how to distinguish male from female. If we approve [of] male on male, female on female, then man is worse than animals.”
The on Tuesday, Pacquiao offered a flimsy apology on Instagram, but reiterated that he does not believe in same-sex marriage.
I'm sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I've hurt. I still stand on my belief that I'm against same sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I'm not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God Bless you all and I'm praying for you.
No official decision has been made by Nike, but it appears that all traces of Pacquiao have been removed from its website.
Nike and Pacquiao have been in partnership since 2006.
