A report by ESPN reveals that Venus Williams’ SUV darted across a six-lane intersection with the other driver, Linda Barson, unable to stop in time to avoid the collision. Mrs. Barson’s husband sustained head trauma and past away two weeks later.
Williams told police she was forced to stop midway because traffic ahead of her was impeding her path, and did so on a green light, adding that she didn’t see Linda’s car. Williams’ was not under the influence at the time but was still at fault because she violated the other drivers right of way.
No charges have been laid at this time.
A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Venus Williams and the family is seeking evidence of the accident that has yet to be released.
“At this point we are attempting to both preserve the evidence and gain access to evidence,” said lawyer Michael Steinger. “There were video cameras placed at guard houses where Ms. Williams lives, police have refused after multiple requests to turn those over to us, and we would like to see a visual portrayal of the accident on those videos.
“They have impounded all the vehicles and have impeded our ability to do our investigation and move forward. Not sure what their reasoning is. They have refused to turn them over to us at this point.”
