The Cubs defeated the Pirates Wednesday night in the National League wild-card game and will advance to the NLDS to take on the Cardinals. But it wasn’t before some real action took place.
In the 7th inning, the Pirates’ Tony Watson hit Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta in the hip with a pitch. Naturally, the benches cleared but cooler heads prevailed. And because Arrieta was dominating Pittsburgh, the belief if that it was done on purpose.
Pirates reliever Tony Watson drilled Arrieta on the left side with a fastball in the top of the seventh inning during Wednesday night’s National League wild-card game. Arrieta and Watson exchanged words near home plate, and the bullpens and benches briefly emptied onto the field. The teams gathered around each other along the first-base line, but it appeared to be mostly pushing and shoving. Watson was issued a warning.
