As the general managers’ meetings concluded Thursday in Boca Raton, the Padres GM, A.J. Preller, completed his third trade in as many days, sending Joaquin Benoit to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Enyel De Los Santos and infielder Nelson Ward.
Both the Mariners and the Padres have been very active during the start of this offseason.
“We’ll go out there, look at more trade possibilities and free agents,” Preller said. “This gives us additional room.”
Relievers like Kevin Quackenbush and Jon Edwards could be given the opportunity to step up but the Padres may also look externally for less expensive options than Benoit, as they seek to redistribute payroll.
The Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto is eager get the team back into playoff contention. The addition of Joaquin Benoit goes a long way in addressing one of the league’s worst bullpens from a season ago.
