A source told John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus this week that Josh Hamilton is seeking a seven-year contract that’s worth $175 million. That’s exactly $25 million a year.
Hamilton might have trouble finding a team that’s willing to make a long term commitment. He struggled to stay consistently healthy during his tenure with the Rangers, and his past with alcohol and drugs is another reason for teams to shy away from signing him for seven years.
I think it would be best for a team to offer Hamilton a four-year contract worth $100 million, but you never know what some of these teams could offer – they could even go above and beyond seven years, $175 million in their contract offers to Hamilton. Prince Fielder signed a nine-year contract worth $214 million last off-season, and Albert Pujols signed a 10-year contract worth $254 million last off-season, so it should not come as a surprise if a team offers above what Hamilton wants.
