On Monday, Cristiano Ronaldo was named Best FIFA Men’s Player. This is his fourth FIFA award, only one less than Lionel Messi. He beat out Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann to claim the prize.
“Wow, wow, wow. It is not the first time but it is the first time for this award. I want to thank my teammates and the whole team of Madrid. I’d like to think my family, my brothers, my mom, my whole staff,” he said in a speech.
“I tell you, 2016 was the best of my career. I had a lot of doubts, but the trophies I think show that I lived up to that and achieved what I could in the competitions.
“It was a year that was magnificent on a personal level and on a sports level. I will never forget this wonderful year.
“I don’t really have anything else to add because awards speak for themselves.”
In 2016 Ronaldo scored 42 goals and 14 assists. He had the third best minutes-per-goal rate (83.68) of anyone and finished top scorer in the Champions League in 2015-16 with 16 goals. He also scored the decisive penalty in the shootout to win the Champions League, rescued Real with a hat-trick in the final of the Club World Cup, captained Portugal to Euro 2016 and was recognized with a fourth Ballon d’Or.
