When Browns head coach Mike Pettine demoted Johnny Manziel from starter to third string QB amid a video of him partying a few weekends ago, he apparently was serious. Josh McCown started for the Browns on Monday night and was injured during that game. He’s now out for the rest of the season. So, under normal circumstances, Manziel would be penciled in. But not so fast.
Pettine has announced Austin Davis will start over Manziel this Sunday. This should be a loud wake-up call for Manziel. While Johnny isn’t a perfect signal caller by any stretch, he certainly has more upside than Austin Davis. This just goes to show that he might have blown his shot.
The Cleveland Browns will start Austin Davis at quarterback over Johnny Manziel against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, coach Mike Pettine announced Wednesday.
“Austin took advantage of his opportunity on Monday night. He was prepared, played well and put us in position to win,” Pettine said in a statement. “He’s been great in the quarterback room all season and he has earned the right to start on Sunday. We expect him to play well.”
