Multiple reports this morning claim that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired head coach Lovie Smith over the telephone on Wednesday night, not even bothering to tell him in person.
It is believed that the Bucs may have panicked when offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter was generating interest from teams as a potential head coaching candidate. Koetter is now expected to be promoted as head coach, whether or not he accepts has yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, many Bucs players seemed stunned by the firing. Linebacker Lavonte David took to twitter to voice his opinion, but later deleted the tweets.
“This is stupid,” David said. “We can’t even have a consistent coach. 3 coaches in 5 yrs.”
“y’all wouldn’t understand how great of a coach/person he is,” an apparent swipe at at those he said were on the “outside” who wanted Smith out after only two seasons
“I guess yall got what you been asking for smh #bs,” David said in another tweet moments later.
Other Bucs players also voiced their disbelief:
Well I'll be damn !!! Smh
