Even if you have the slightest passing interest in football, surely the name Marcus Mariota rings a bell. He’s only the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and one of the most talked about college quarterbacks over the past few seasons. Given all of that, you’d think the commissioner of the NFL would know how to pronounce his name. But as we found out last week during the draft, he doesn’t, as Roger Goodell mispronounced Marcus’ last name when he announced the Titans drafted him second overall. He called him “Marioto.”
For this, Goodell actually called Marcus to apologize.
“Everyone was cheering so loud that I wasn’t able to actually hear it,” Mariota said via ESPN. “He gave me a call probably half an hour later. He apologized, and I’m like, ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about.’ But he was really apologetic and I truly respect that for sure.”
