Lawrence Phillips, Former NFL Running Back, Accused of Killing Cellmate in Prison

Lawrence_Phillips_mugshotPrison officials yesterday are saying that they suspect former NFL Runningback Lawrence Phillips of killing his cellmate. Phillips was a former star at the the University of Nebraska. He was a controversial pick by the St.Louis Rams in 6th position of the 1996 NFL Draft, due to his many legal issues.

He then bounced around the NFL, Europe, and the Canadian Football leagues before spinning out of football in the early 2000’s. Then this….

Phillips is serving a sentence of more than 31 years. He was convicted of twice choking his girlfriend in 2005 in San Diego and in 2006 of driving his car into three teens after a pickup football game in Los Angeles. It wasn’t clear whether Phillips has an attorney.

The officials from the prison and the police haven’t released any details as to the cause of death, but they are saying they suspect foul play….

Phillips’ cellmate at Kern Valley State Prison was found lifeless early Saturday and later pronounced dead, prison spokesman Lt. Marshall Denning said in a statement. He is suspected of killing Damion Soward, a 37-year-old inmate from San Bernardino County serving 82 years to life for a first-degree murder conviction
