Johnny Manziel lied to the Cleveland Browns about a video of him partying.
Earlier this week, a video of Manziel partying with a bottle of champagne emerged. The video was uploaded through a DJ’s Instagram account during the Browns’ bye week, but Manziel told the Broncos that the video was old.
According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Manziel was benched this week by coach Mike Pettine not only for partying during bye week but for lying about it and asking others who were in the video to do the same. Pettine was “disappointed” in Manziel who spent almost two months in rehab this offseason. The Browns wanted him to stay around the team facility and lay low during bye week.
“He lied to the Cleveland Browns,” Glazer said. “Making it worse, he called the people involved [with the video] and said ‘Hey, cover this up for me, make sure that they think it’s old.'”
“[The Browns] want to see how he handles this situation,” Glazer said. “If he rises up, that’s what they’re looking for.”
Mike Pettine said on Wednesday that the Browns are not considering releasing him and that his future with them is far from over.
“We told him yesterday – this isn’t a dead end,” Pettine said. “This is a hurdle. It’s an obstacle. So, part of success in athletics is dealing with adversity, and this will be an example of it.”
Only time will tell whether or not Manziel rises above this ‘adversity’.
