Santa Clara May Ban Alcohol Sales During the Second Half

With all the fan violence that seems to be surrounding the Vikings lately, two Santa Clara City Council members have asked that the “health and safety issues at the stadium” be addressed during the next city council meeting. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, they have suggested cutting off alcohol sales at halftime. This alcohol ban was suggested after a video surfaced of 49ers fans assaulting a Vikings fan after the game. Four people were arrested on suspicion of felony assault.

“We really need to send a message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated,” Gillmore said.

O’Neill said that she would be on-board with a second-half alcohol ban.

“I know they make a lot of money off of alcohol sales, but if people have an hour and a half (without alcohol) maybe they will cool down a bit,” O’Neill said.

Will banning alcohol sales during the second half really help curb the violence? Let’s not kid ourselves here, these people have been drinking long before the game even started so cutting them off a half hour early may not be the best solution. Perhaps a more visible police presence could help. It may not end the violence but a person may think twice before getting into an altercation if police are around. There will be lots to be discussed during the meeting which is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m.
