The Tennessee Titans were not the only ones who took exception to Cam Newton’s elaborate touchdown celebration on Sunday. A mom who attended the Titans’ game with her 9-year-old daughter was disgusted by Cam Newton’s behavior. She wrote an open letter criticizing Newton’s “chest puffs”, “pelvic thrusts” and general taunting that her daughter and other fans had to witness.
Her issue with Cam Newton is that she didn’t know what to tell her daughter who had questions about his behavior on the field.
You can read the letter in its entirety on the Charlotte Observer’s website, but here’s a small portion of her complaints:
I refuse to believe you don’t realize you are a role model. You are paid millions of dollars every week to play hard and be a leader. In the off season you’re expected to make appearances, support charities, and inspire young kids to pursue your sport and all sports. With everything the NFL has gone through in recent years, I’m confident they have advised that you are, by virtue of your position and career choice, a role model.
And because you are a role model, your behavior brought out like behavior in the stands. Some of the Panthers fans in our section began taunting the hometown fans. Many Titans fans booed you, a few offering instructive, but not necessarily family friendly, suggestions as to how you might change your behavior.
My daughter sensed the change immediately – and started asking questions. Won’t he get in trouble for doing that? Is he trying to make people mad? Do you think he knows he looks like a spoiled brat?
I didn’t have great answers for her, and honestly, in an effort to minimize your negative impact and what was otherwise a really fun day, I redirected her attention to the cheerleaders and mascot.
It’s laughable that of all the things one could be outraged at when attending an NFL game her big issue is with a celebratory dance. Cam Newton is a role model. He visits children in need of support and donates his time and money to local sports teams. No one is asking you to accept him as a role model, but if you truly deplore his behavior then just tell your daughter how you feel, no need to criticize an athlete in an open letter simply for celebrating.
Here is a video of the actions this mother was so appalled by, you be the judge:

As for Cam Newton, the quarterback has already discussed on Twitter his dance and the upset feelings it caused among Titans players and fans.
Cam on angering Titans: "I'm a firm believer if you don't like it, keep me out (of the end zone)."
