For the first in the team’s history, the Arizona Cardinals won 12 games in a season. The 12th victory came Sunday night in a home win vs. Philly. But on the teams’s final defensive play, standout CB Tyrann Mathieu intercepted Sam Bradford’s pass and landed very awkwardly.
He immediately fell to the ground and grabbed his knee. It was one of the non-contact injuries, which are always the worst kind.
The afterwards is what Cardinals fans were fearing: Mathieu is out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. His second such injury of his short career.
Mathieu exited Sunday’s 40–17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth quarter after sustaining the injury without much contract from an opponent. He underwent an MRI in Phoenix on Monday morning.
