The NHL’s 30 teams may soon grow to 31. The has reportedly decided to expand, and that destination will be none other than Las Vegas.
A professional team in Vegas has sounded appealing to fans for quite some time. The NBA held their all-star game there roughly a decade ago, and most recently, the Raiders were in talks to move there. But how will a hockey team fare in the middle of the desert?
This happening is contingent upon the organizers coming up with $500 million. A team could play in Vegas as early as the 2017-18 season.
The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because details have not been released by the league ahead of its Board of Governors meeting on June 22 in Las Vegas. Quebec City was also considered for expansion.
A second person who had been briefed on the decision said Las Vegas was a “done deal” following the recommendation of the NHL’s executive committee.
