NHL Power Rankings For 3-04-13

dphan March 6, 2013 NHL No Comments
Rank Team Name W-L Comments

1

Blackhawks

19-0-3 After 22 games, they have failed to lose a game in regulation. Could they go the entire season without a loss?

2

Bruins

14-3-2 Losing only three games in regulation is an amazing feat this far into a season no matter what Chicago is doing.

3

Canadiens

14-4-4 They aren’t going to be number one in the east when the season ends. However, they are one of four teams north of the border to keep an eye on.

4

Ducks

15-3-3 If it weren’t for Chicago playing lights out hockey, they would be the team to beat in the west.

5

Penguins

15-8-0 Their 7-6 win over Montreal had to be the best game so far this season if you like offense.

6

Canucks

11-6-4 They are 4-4-2 in their last 10. That has opened the door for other teams to potentially leapfrog them in the standings.

7

Hurricanes

12-8-1 After dealing with injuries to their top forwards, goalie Cam Ward is now expected to miss up to eight weeks with an injury.

8

Senators

12-7-4 Despite losing three in a row, the Senators are a quality team that should look for help at the trade deadline.

9

Maple Leags

14-9-0 The Leafs are a team that needs to be taken seriously this season. Even with a shortened schedule working in their favor, they could be a sleeper team in the east.

10

Sharks

10-6-4 The Sharks have righted the ship after a terrible February. They will need to keep winning to establish themselves.

11

Blues

11-8-2 The epitome of a team in the west right now. Playing .500 hockey in a conference where everyone is muddled together.

12

Wild

11-8-2 The Wild are only two points behind Vancouver for the division lead. Could they catapult themselves to number three in the west?

13

Stars

11-9-2 The Derek Roy trade seems to be working out quite well for both the Stars and the Sabres.

14

Red Wings

10-8-4 They came so close to ending the Blackhawks streak on Sunday. Alas, it was not meant to be.

15

Devils

10-7-5 The Devils have lost something since Martin Brodeur was lost to an injury. They are 0-3-1 in their last four after a shootout loss to Buffalo on Saturday.

16

Coyotes

11-8-3 A 6-3-1 run has taken them from playoff afterthought to sitting on the doorstep of the playoffs in the west.

17

Predators

9-9-5 The Predators are sitting in tenth place. The good news is that they are only one point out of fourth.

18

Flyers

11-11-1 Danny Briere is available via trade. Will anyone give up what the Flyers are asking for?

19

Rangers

10-8-2 It’s good to see that Brad Richards is OK. It was hilarious to hear everyone refer to Rick Nash as Steve Nash during the Sabres-Rangers broadcast.

20

Kings

11-7-2 The defending champs are making a charge up the standings as of late. Can they hold on to their playoff position?

21

Jets

10-10-1 In a topsy-turvy division, they could win the division title or fail to make the playoffs altogether. Its only a matter of time before Carolina comes back to them.

22

Islanders

9-11-2 The big story is that Rick DiPetrio wanted to kill himself. Not the type of headlines that your team wants.

23

Sabres

9-12-2 The Sabres are 3-0-1 in their last four and look like a team that can make some noise. Unfortunately, Patrick Kaleta’s reputation just got him suspended.

24

Avalanche

8-8-4 The Avalanche finally got one of their core players locked up for the next two years. Will that help them turn their season around?

25

Flames

8-8-4 They signed Ryan O’Reilly to an offer sheet only to see the Avalanche match it. Comically, he would have had to pass waivers first. Calgary almost lost a first and third round pick for nothing.

26

Oilers

8-9-4 The Oilers look like they will turn another wasted season into another top draft pick.

27

Lightning

9-12-1 They have yet to win a game this season when scoring fewer than three goals.

28

Capitals

8-11-1 They have looked more competitive in the past week or so. Maybe they could make a run for a division title?

29

Blue Jackets

6-12-4 Although they are dead last in points, they could probably beat Florida if they played tonight.

30

Panthers

6-11-5 A -27 goal differential is absolutely inexcusable. It looks like the magic is no longer there in Florida. At least they aren’t playing in front of large crowds.
