NHL Power Rankings: January 27, 2013

Patrick Kane and Marian HossaAfter six games, the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks remain the only two undefeated teams…

Rank Team Name W-L Comments

1

Blackhawks

6-0 Chicago is off to a 6-0 start and it looks like they could be an early favorite to go the Stanley Cup Finals and maybe win.

2

Sharks

5-0 One of two undefeated teams remaining in the NHL. Could this be their year or will Chicago ruin it?

3

Blues

5-1 With 10 points in six games, their only fault is playing in the same division as the Chicago Blackhawks.

4

Lightning

4-1 Tampa is doing this year what they should have been doing last year. There is a good chance that they hold on to the number seed all season.

5

Devils

3-0-1 With 11 goals scored and seven goals against, the New Jersey Devils are once again the most boring team in hockey.

6

Bruins

4-0-1 The Boston Bruins should eventually pull away from Ottawa and Buffalo to win the division.

7

Senators

3-1-1 Ottawa has shown the ability to score with a goal differential of plus six in just five games so far this season.

8

Wild

2-2-1 With five points, they might just be that team that gets a division title just because everyone else plays so poorly.

9

Ducks

3-1 The Ducks are the surprise team in the league right now with six points in four games. Can they keep it up?

10

Jets

3-1-1 The Jets started fast last year as well. The true test for this team will be in April.

11

Canadiens

3-1-0 No P.K. Subban? No problem for the Canadiens so far this season. His contract is going to become less of a priority if the team keeps playing well.

12

Penguins

3-2 Playing well on the road is always the sign of a good team. Getting six out of every eight points on the road is usually how you win a title.

13

 Stars

2-3-1 Now that the Mavericks season is over, Dallas fans may have to root for the Stars until the Cowboys come back.

14

 Predators

1-2-3 It looks like Nashville wants to take the Florida Panther route into the playoffs this year. Three overtime points in five games so far this season.

15

Red Wings

2-2-1 Detroit always finds a way to recover no matter how poorly they play in the regular season. They will be there at the end.

16

Canucks

2-2-2 They are supposed to be the elite team in the west. This is what happens when you have a goaltending crisis.

17

Rangers

2-3 They get put ahead of the Islanders because we all know that they will improve from their slow start.

18

Islanders

2-2-1 If they can find some consistency, they may be able to hang around that last playoff spot for awhile.

19

Hurricanes

2-3 A slow start was redeemed with a home-and-home sweep of the Buffalo Sabres.

20

Avalanche

2-3 Their division is a weak one right now. If Vancouver doesn’t reclaim it, the Avs could do some damage.

21

Oilers

3-2 Edmonton has the look of an average team right now. However, that’s the next step from terrible to playoff contender.

22

Flames

1-2-1 Another season, another year not quite good enough to make the playoffs?

23

Sabres

2-3 The season appears lost almost as quickly as it was deemed a success. Snapping their three game skid should be a priority.

24

Maple Leafs

2-3 Does Toronto have a goalie yet? Their 17 goals allowed is near the tops in the league.

25

Kings

2-2-1 They get a pass because of the Stanley Cup hangover. The Bruins started out the same way last season.

26

Flyers

2-4 Could they be one of those teams that struggles to make the playoffs in a shortened season?

27

Blue Jackets

2-3-1 The fans are enjoying their time in the sun. Second-to-last place is the highest that they have been in a long time.

28

Capitals

1-3-1 Alex Ovechkin has seemingly lost a step. His aura of invincibility may be quickly fading.

29

Coyotes

2-4 Sitting in last place in your conference isn’t the best look when trying to convince the fans to support you.

30

Panthers

1-4 Starting 1-4 this season doesn’t do much to dispel the notion that they weren’t a good team last year either.
