NHL Power Rankings Through 2-24-13

Rank Team Name W-L Comments

1

Blackhawks

15-0-3 After 18 games, they still don’t have a regulation loss. That is an NHL record. They could have a playoff berth clinched by midway through the season at this rate.

2

Bruins

11-2-2 Aside from losses to the Sabres, the Bruins are owning the competition right now. If it wasn’t for Chicago being on fire right now, a Presidents Trophy wouldn’t be out of the question.

3

Canadiens

12-4-2 The top team in the east gets put at number three only because they have played more games than Boston. Once the numbers even out, its doubtful that they will still own the best record.

4

Canucks

10-4-4 Despite losing big to Detroit on Sunday, they have a stranglehold on their division and can safely look ahead to the postseason.

5

Ducks

13-2-1 Having lost only once in their last 10 games, a number two or three seed should be within reach for the Ducks.

6

Penguins

13-6-0 Evgeni Malkin has concussion-like symptoms. After what happened to Sidney Crosby in recent years, that is never a good thing to hear.

7

Devils

10-5-4 It will be a fierce battle with Pittsburgh the rest of the season to see who wins that division.

8

Senators

11-6-2 Minus Jason Spezza, the Senators are playing some inspired hockey. They have won four games in a row.

9

Blues

10-6-2 Winning the division is not a possibility. However, they still need to fight to avoid falling farther in the west.

10

Maple Leafs

11-8-0 Could they end their playoff drought this year? Ben Scrivens and James Reimer are both providing solid goalie play in Toronto.

11

Red Wings

9-7-3 Detroit pasted Vancouver 8-3 on Sunday. That’s just the thing that can propel a team towards a long run of good hockey.

12

Predators

8-6-5 Their -4 goal differential is among the worst of any teams currently in a playoff position.

13

Lightning

9-8-1 Tampa is tied for the fewest points of any playoff team right now. They have a lot of ground to hold onto in a top heavy conference.

14

Flyers

9-10-1 Philly has also overcome a slow start to surge into the top nine in the east. However, it will be tough to stay there with many division games left to play.

15

Coyotes

8-7-3 A 6-2-2 run in their last 10 games has them sitting in the thick of the playoff standings.

16

Sharks

8-6-3 February has not been kind to San Jose. Losing seven of eight has caused them to drop to the middle of the conference standings.

17

Stars

9-8-1 Dallas can either jump into a playoff spot or fall completely out of it. That’s how bunched up the west is right now.

18

Rangers

8-7-2 New York seems to be rounding into form after a slow start. Expect to seem them play well into May or June.

19

Hurricanes

9-7-1 It’s been an up and down season in Carolina this year. The good news is that there is time to catch up quickly.

20

Wild

8-7-2 They are in the one division where being in second place isn’t really anything to brag about.

21

Kings

8-6-2 A three game winning streak has catapaulted the Kings to within a mere point of the playoffs.

22

Jets

8-9-1 On the other hand, by winning three of their last four, the Jets have fans hoping that they can parlay that into some consistently good hockey.

23

Islanders

8-10-1 Despite a recent two game winning streak, this team still is a ways away from being a contender.

24

Oilers

7-7-3 There is no excuse for this team not to be contending for a playoff spot right now or maybe even the division title.

25

Avalanche

7-8-2 If they can clean up their issues on the road, they may be able to be a contender down the stretch.

26

Flames

7-7-3 They neither score goals or stop goals from being scored on them. That won’t win a lot of games.

27

Capitals

6-10-1 Alex Ovechkin had a hat trick against New Jersey. Maybe that will light a spark under him for the rest of the year.

28

Panthers

5-9-4 Losing six of seven is no way to repeat as playoff participants. At least there are some good players coming out in the draft this year.

29

Sabres

6-12-1 Fighting after the game never helps. Even the ownership is starting to realize that maybe it wasn’t all Lindy Ruff after all.

30

Blue Jackets

5-12-2 The potential move to the east next year may provide the Blue Jackets with some chances to win games.
