Prosecutors Believe Evidence Bag In Patrick Kane Case Was A Hoax

On Wednesday, the lawyer of the woman who accused Blackhawks star Patrick Kane of rape claimed someone left an opened evidence bag that once contained the rape kit at the accuser’s mother’s house. Yesterday, the woman’s lawyer, Thomas Eoannou, retracted the allegation and resigned, saying he no longer believed that version of events. Today, the District Attorney held a press conference strongly implying that the bag was a fake and a hoax perpetrated by the accuser’s mother.

Erie County DA Frank Sedita said the rape kit was never in a bag and that no evidence was tampered with. The rape kit remains in an evidence locker at the lab. The DA walked reporters through a detailed timeline and surveillance video. The video shows that the kit was put in a box and not a bag. No criminal charges are expected to be laid as it is not illegal to lie to a lawyer, as the mother of the accuser did in this case.

These latest developments will not affect the ongoing investigation but could make it more difficult to prosecute Patrick Kane.

The Tribune reported that Kane spent the night of Aug. 1 at SkyBar. An off-duty police officer drove Kane, a male friend, the accuser and her friend to the player’s home after leaving the bar. The accuser alleges that she went by herself into another room where Kane followed her, overpowered her and raped her.

Multiple sources told the Tribune that the female friend no longer fully backs the accuser’s version of events and has expressed reluctance to testify on her behalf. Without her corroboration, it would be harder for prosecutors to move the case forward.
