San Jose Sharks Acquire Jannik Hansen

On Tuesday, the Vancouver Canucks traded Jannik Hansen to the San Jose Sharks. In return they acquired forward prospect Nikolay Goldobin and a conditional fourth-round 2017 pick.

“They are a very good team that has a shot,” Hansen said of the Sharks. “That part is extremely exciting to me. The other side of that coin is leaving [Vancouver]. I enjoyed playing here. My family likes it here. A lot of very good friends throughout the organization. So it’s with a heavy heart that I’m leaving a place like this.”

Jannik Hansen has appeared in 28 games with the Canucks and has six goals and seven assists. The 30-year-old has one year remaining on his contract at an NHL salary-cap charge of $2.5 million.

“Excited to have him,” San Jose coach Peter DeBoer said. “He was right at the top of our list when we started compiling the characteristics of what we felt we needed, a guy that played both ways, had speed, could kill penalties, could chip in some goals, could play with good players, had a long history in the playoffs, knew the Western Conference. All those boxes checked, and from a character point of view, the reports were fantastic as far as fitting in with our group. It looks good.

“We’re excited to get him here. He’s going to add to the group we already have, which is a group we’re already excited about. It gives us a little more depth, a little more speed.”

Goldobin, 21, was the No. 27 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft by San Jose. He has played two NHL games this season, and has one goal and one assist in 11 NHL games. He also has 15 goals and 41 points in 46 games in the AHL.

“He’s a left shot, plays the right side, protects the puck good, is good around the net, good vision, good release on his shot,” Benning said. “He’s always been a goal-scorer.”

The NHL Trade Deadline is today at 3 p.m.
