Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers collected his 37th RBI on Monday against the San Francisco Giants causing him to surpass Mark McGwire and Juan Gonzalez and claim the all-time MLB record for most RBIs before May 1.
Bellinger threw a runner out at third base from right field and singled home the first run on an 0-2 pitch off a left-hander for another MLB record.
It’s been an incredible opening five weeks for him and last night was the second straight night where he made history.
On Sunday, he joined Albert Pujols (2006), Alex Rodriguez (2007), and Christian Yelich (2019) as the only four players with 14 home runs before May 1. He also owns the MLB record for total bases before May.
Bellinger now has 14 homers, 37 RBIs, 36 hits and 30 runs this season, all league-bests. He will enter Tuesday’s contest with a chance to set a record for home runs before May.
